On December 28, the Good People Social Support Fund opened a new mother and child crisis center in Saratov, Russia. The facility was consecrated by the chairman of the foundation and head of the Saratov Diocese’s Social Department, Igumen Nektary (Morozov).

This is the 85th shelter for mothers in crisis situations opened with the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church, reports the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for Charity and Social Service.

The Good People Social Support Fund has been operating in Saratov since July 2020, offering clothing, food and medicine, and free consultations with lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and doctors.

Three to five families (pregnant women, women with children and families in crises) at a time will be able to receive temporary housing and comprehensive assistance at the shelter.

The shelter is the first step in broader work, Fr. Nektary said, noting it will serve as the foundation for cooperation with maternity hospitals and women’s consultations. Now the call for mothers not to abort their children will be met with specific assistance, he emphasized.

In addition to providing housing, food, and medicine, the center is dedicated to addressing whatever specific issues each mother or family is facing.

Earlier this month, the Russian Church also opened its 265th humanitarian aid center.
