Russian priest helps evacuate dozens from flooded hospital

Priests of the Orsk Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church are providing assistance to victims of a recent dam break in Orsk, Orenburg Province.

In particular, Archpriest Vyacheslav Kochkin, head of the diocese’s social department, helped evacuate 45 patients from the flooded hospital. Diocesan priests also delivered 65 pounds of clothes and food to four temporary accommodation points, reports the Synodal Department for Charity and Social Service.

The diocese will deliver another 50 food packages in the near future.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 1,121 people, including 331 children have been evacuated in Orsk since the evening of April 5. Overall, 4,400 people were evacuated in the Orenburg Province.

“There are many elderly and disabled people among the victims. When the water subsides, we’ll actively deploy volunteer assistance to put the houses of the victims in order,” said Fr. Vyacheslav.
