The man who desecrated the grave of His Holiness Patriarch Neofit of Bulgaria was given a preliminary diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Ivo Dimitrov, 37, will be sent for further examination, reports Novini 24/7.

The man vandalized the grave of Patriarch Neofit, who reposed on March 13, on both Saturday and Monday, as seen on security camera footage that police used to find the culprit.

The Sofia Regional Court released Dimitrov yesterday, arguing that the offense was not so serious and that detention in custody would be too strict.

Given his preliminary diagnosis of schizophrenia, his lawyer demanded that he be placed in a clinic and given a more precise diagnosis.

Dimitrov revealed that he was treated in a psychiatric clinic 15 years ago, after which he made some improvement.

According to the Bulgarian News Agency, the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office will appeal the court’s decision to release Dimitrov.

Bulgarian law provides for a penalty of up to 3 years in prison or probation for such vandalism.
