Locals are talking about how a miracle took place in their village of Voden in south-central Bulgaria.

As wildfires ripped through the country this month, burning up hundreds of thousands of acres, no settlement was more affected than Voden, where more than 60 houses burned down.

Nevertheless, despite the destruction, villagers are proclaiming a miracle, as the raging fire simply subsided before the doors of the village church, reports trud.bg.

“The fire and its fierce fury turned everything in its path to ashes, but surprisingly failed to burn the Church of St. George the Victorious. Locals believe this is a sign from God,” the outlet writes.

“It can’t be a coincidence that everything burned down, but only the church didn’t. This is a sign. A miracle!” the residents say.

Subdeacon Atanas Stefanov who went to the site to help people on the ground talks about how God used one old man to fight the flames:

A surge of superhuman strength in one elderly man saved the church. The old man managed to make over a hundred trips with buckets of water. He didn’t get tired because God’s strength and his faith helped. Brothers and sisters Bulgarians, we must take example from this man. His faith gave him superhuman abilities in this difficult moment. We need to become more believing and better. And pray every day because faith is our savior. May God protect Orthodoxy and Mother Bulgaria.

The photographer who captured the view of the burned areas that literally died out before the church gates was also stunned by what he saw.
