The Polish Orthodox Diocese of Lublin and Chełm celebrated the 35th anniversary of its revival this weekend with the opening of a monument in honor of its Heavenly patron, St. Athanasius of Brest, the 16th-century defender of Orthodoxy against false union with the Catholic church.

The monument was solemnly consecrated on Sunday, September 22, near the village of Jabłeczna in southern Podlasie, by His Eminence Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Chełm and diocesan clergy, including the abbot of the St. Onuphrius Monastery in Jabłeczna, Archimandrite Piotr, and Protodeacon Marek Kiryluk, reports the Polish Orthodox Church.

The service was also another opportunity to give thanks to God for the 100th anniversary of Polish Church autocephaly, which is being celebrated throughout 2024. Last month, 100 crosses were erected on Poland’s holy mountain of Grabarka in honor of the centennial.

During the service, the clergy choir of the Lublin-Chełm Diocese sang under the direction of Deacon Jan Natiażko.

The area around the monument was filled with numerous faithful who had come from all corners of the diocese.

Last week, the Belarusian Church celebrated the 345th anniversary of the uncovering of St. Athanasius’ relics in Brest, near the border with Poland.
