210 catechumens received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on Saturday, December 27, at the Patriarchate of Alexandria’s Metropolis of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, continuing a tradition of year-end Baptisms in the region.

The service took place at the Church of St. George in Kolwezi, where Bishop Kosmas of Konstantiana presided over the Divine Liturgy before administering the Sacrament. The event was held despite challenging weather conditions, reports Romfea.

Assisted by priests and deacons, Bp. Kosmas led the Baptismal service, after which all the newly baptized received Holy Communion for the first time.

Year-end baptisms have become a tradition in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Orthodox Church witnessing significant growth in the region. In December 2022, the Metropolis celebrated the baptism of 230 people, and another 172 a few days later in January 2023.

"It is truly moving to see people of all ages becoming Orthodox Christians," local observers noted, "leaving other Christian confessions and heresies to become members of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church."

“It’s moving to see people of all ages becoming Orthodox, who were in other Christian denominations and sects, and becoming members of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church,” writes Romfea.
