Three families who lost their homes in a fire this spring have moved into brand-new houses built by the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Buzău and Vrancea. Many dioceses of the Romanian Church have a strong tradition of providing housing to needy families, and this project continues that work.

His Eminence Archbishop Ciprian consecrated the three houses on Thursday and handed them over to the families. Clergy and representatives of local and county authorities attended the inauguration, reports the Basilica News Agency.

The fire in Soveja broke out on April 26 and spread to several homes in the village. Construction on the new homes began in mid-June and wrapped up on September 19.

The Archbishop stressed the importance of helping neighbors in hard times. “God works miracles, but He always accomplishes them through believing, hardworking people moved by pure love,” he said.

“When disaster strikes a community, it’s essential to mobilize quickly and show solidarity,” Archbishop Ciprian said. “We’ve shown that we’re good Christians not just in words, but above all through concrete acts of help for those who are suffering.”

Nicușor Halici, the president of the Vrancea County Council, spoke about the importance of cooperation between institutions and the Church for the good of communities. “The Church is an integral part of our people and our country, and it’s the one that can restore things to their natural state,” he said.

“Together with the Church, in brotherly communion, we’ll always manage to overcome any trial,” he added.

The money to start building the three houses came from clergy and faithful in Buzău and Vrancea counties, along with a financial contribution from the diocesan center. The Archdiocese of Lower Danube and the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți joined the effort, as did many donors from across the country.
