Morogoro, Tanzania, October 20, 2026
270 former Muslims became Orthodox Christians in eastern Tanzania on Saturday, when Metropolitan Dimitrios of Irinoupolis of the Patriarchate of Alexandria baptized them at the Orthodox mission center in Morogoro.
Mass Baptisms have taken place every year at this time for the past 22 years. Since 2004, more than 60,000 newly illumined have been baptized by Metropolitan Dimitrios, reports Romfea.
Last year, 372 people were baptized, including 205 former Muslims.
The new Orthodox Christians were prepared through systematic catechesis led by the Patriarchal Vicar Archpriest Cleopas Bachuba, a native Tanzanian, and the seven priests of the area.
“They came forward for Holy Haptism and their first Holy Communion with exemplary order, reverence, and great joy,” the report states.
“The joy of the 270 newly baptized (all former Muslims) was truly moving, with faces shining with joy and compunction.”
An agape meal for all the newly baptized was held after the service. It was offered by anonymous donors from Thessaloniki in memory of their parents, Anastasia and Solomon, and of the pioneering missionary Metropolitan Amphilochios (Tsoukos) of Rhodes.
