There was never a time when the western creed recited in Europe didn't include the Filioque. It became a problem when it was included into the creed & now orthodox believe that before that, the Filioque didn't exist although Sts Ambrose, Isidore, Hilary & Augustine all taught the Filioque theology & the creed adopted by Spain after converting from Arianism in the 500's included the clause. The popes didn't want to add to a creed defined at a council guided by the Holy Spirit though until much later & that's really the problem with it.

The creed doesn't say the spirit proceeds from the Father alone & St John Damascene says it proceeds from the Father through the Son & Maximus the Confessor says it's not a heretical teaching for the Latin church 'cuz they teach the Father is the sole source of the persons; the principle without principle. What's sad is that many orthodox today condemn it without even studying the controversy from both sides 'cuz if they would, they would see many saints canonized in the east & western church taught it.

Until the Catholics decide to get rid of the Vatican, the Filioque, the purchasing of indulgences, purgatory, renounce the "infallibility" of the pope, etc. etc. etc. there can be NO "embracing each other."

That will NEVER happen. Forget about it. The schism is complete and final. There can be NO union. It was over a thousand years ago. Patriarch Bartholomew should not be meeting with Francis. There is nothing to discuss. End of story.
