Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia will lead the festivities marking the 1000th anniversary of the presence of Russian monasticism on Athos in late May.
"I hope to visit Athos on May 27 and remain there till May 29, solemnly commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the first reference to a Russian abode on Athos alongside the brethren of the Holy Mountain, its numerous pilgrims and guests," the patriarch said at the formal event in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations on Moscow on Thursday.
