Support gathered for families of Dagestan church-shooting victims

Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, February 22, 2018

Funds collected by the Dagestan Charitable Foundation and various other organizations, businesses, and residents of the republic have been transferred to the families of those injured and killed in Sunday’s shooting at St. George Cathedral in Kizlyar, that left five dead and four injured, Makhachkala Diocese Secretary Hieromonk John (Anisimov) told TASS.

“The government of Dagestan and the republic’s charitable foundation transferred donations yesterday to the families of those killed and wounded. The diocese will also provide material assistance. People are coming who would like to donate and help the families of those killed,” Fr. John said.

According to cathedral rector Fr. Paul Kalikin, local business began offering their help as soon as the tragedy occurred. The district and city administration also took over the organization of the funeral, Fr. Paul said.

It was earlier reported that the Dagestan government head Artem Zdunov had ordered the allocation of 500,000 rubles ($8,800) to the victims’ families. The People’s Assembly of the Republic has also announced their readiness to give the families their one-day’s earnings. Negotiations are also underway with local businesses for further assistance to the families.

Not only are funds being raised in the Dagestan Republic, but Ingushetia head Yunus-Bek Yevkurov has also announced a ten-day fundraising campaign to assist the families of the victims.

I really can not express the sadness that I feel when I read this. The great Russian people sacrificed a great deal to help the Syrian people, especially the Christians of Syria, and we are forever grateful. The Russian Orthodox were the only ones willing to shed their blood to help their brothers and sisters in Christ, and now God has granted that you too share in the rich blessings of gaining new martyrs to intercede for you and and for us. I as a Christian from the Middle East wish that I could do more to help Russia, its people and its government, but all I can do and say for now is-THANK YOU! May God reward, bless and protect you from all your enemies! We are forever indebted to you!
