His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East considers the unity of Antioch to be strong, although he admits that there are attempts by “external forces” to weaken its unity, reports RIA-Novosti.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier spoke about attempts to divide the Antiochian Church at a meeting with a delegation of deputies of the Russian State Duma on January 17.

“We are committed to our common cause, our goals and objectives, our principles in Lebanon and Syria. And our people do not accept any divisions, any schisms. The Metropolitan of Beirut is our dear brother and all the members of our Holy Synod take the same position,” the Patriarch said after a meeting with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia yesterday, responding to requests to comment on the Syrian president’s words.

At the same time, he added: “If we’re talking about attempts that some forces are making with this aim, external forces, to weaken the Antiochian Church one way or another, that’s not a secret for anyone.”

Pat. John arrived in Moscow yesterday with a delegation from the Antiochian Church for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Pat. Kirill’s enthronement this weekend. He then met with Pat. Kirill at his patriarchal residence in Moscow’s Danilov Monastery, where the two primates discussed the high level of bilateral relations between the two Churches and the difficult situations that both Churches are currently experiencing in Syria and in Ukraine.
