Belgian doctors open discussion of involuntary euthanasia

Belgium, March 20, 2014

Some doctors in Belgium have suggested discussion of legalizing euthanasia without requiring the consent of the patient.

Euthanasia is already legal in Belgium; last year 1,432 people were put to death by their doctors, at the patients’ request. In February the government extended legal euthanasia by allowing children to opt for mercy killing.

The current law, however, requires patients to make an informed choice to end their own lives. Doctors now suggest that they should be able to make that decision for patients who are unable to express themselves, whether or not they are suffering.

"It becomes a general mentality – If I'm sick, old or just don't want to live anymore, I just fill in the form and ask for euthanasia. We don't invest in palliative care anymore...it's very fashionable to ask to die in this way."

No-one is telling lies – we are telling the truth so people may realise what is really going on under the guise of ‘good, medical practice’ in Belgium. We seek no gain apart from that truth and the suspension of their terrible practice of euthanasia.

Listed against the proposal were a group of some 200 Belgian paediatricians, a group from within the Assembly of the Council of Europe and the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) who issued a declaration from their international conference in Mumbai in the days preceding the vote. The ICPCN were clear: euthanasia is not part of palliative care and is not an alternative to palliative care.

The Orthodox Church does not support euthanasia at all, and this elemental repugnance for practicing it on children was articulately expressed here by other religious leaders as well. Although views on the Leader’s page were both for and against euthanasia in general, the euthanasia of children causes more wavering, just as euthanasia of any human would have done before the onset of its mainstreaming.

As we face an increasingly secular and materialistic world, the role of women as bearers of life is consciously and masterfully being turned upside down.
