Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria and All Africa met with Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, the President of the Holy Synod of the Greek Church, today in Athens, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
Few details of the meeting were available as of the time of writing, but the report notes that the Patriarch thanked the Church of Greece for its support.
As the Greek agency notes, this meeting is especially important given Pat. Theodoros’ recent decision to recognize the Ukrainian schismatics and to begin commemorating their primate Epiphany Dumenko in the Divine services.
The Patriarchate of Alexandria is also heavily dependent upon the Greek Foreign Ministry for funding and diplomatic help, and it is widely believed that Pat. Theodoros recognized the schismatics under severe press from the Greek state and Greek hierarchs within his own Patriarchate.
Abp. Ieronymos himself officially recognized Dumenko in a letter dated October 21, and first commemorated him on Sunday, November 10.
Pat. Theodoros recently caused a scandal in Cyprus when he commemorated Dumenko despite the request of the local ruling hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, and despite his own promise not to do so.
