Patriarch Kirill blesses faithful to bless Paschal kulichi, eggs, baskets at home

Given the strict quarantine measures in place in Moscow and in many places throughout Russia preventing the faithful from attending the Holy Week and Paschal services, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill has given his blessing for Pascha baskets to be blessed at home.

To bless Paschal kulichi, eggs, and other items, the faithful should sing the Paschal troparion three times: “Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.”

Then the food should be sprinkled with holy water, with the words: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen,” reports Patriarchia.ru.

The same blessing was given for the faithful to consecrate palms and pussy willows at home this past Sunday.

While the Greek Orthodox Church has officially petitioned the state to at least allow clergy to celebrate Holy Week and Paschal services behind closed doors, the Holy Synod decided yesterday to transfer the public celebration of Pascha to the leavetaking of the feast on the night of May 26-27, by which time, God-willing, the churches will have reopened.
