New abbot appointed for Sretensky Monastery from among the brotherhood

Meeting under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in Moscow yesterday, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church resolved to release His Eminence Archbishop Ambrose of Verey from his post as abbot of Moscow’ famous Sretensky Monastery and rector of Sretensky Seminary.

Hieromonk John (Ludischev), a longtime member of the Sretensky brotherhood who was the dean of Sretensky Monastery for many years under then Archimandrite, now Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Pskov, under whose leadership Sretensky Monastery was resurrected in the 1990s, was appointed as the new abbot, reports the official site of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Fr. John also served as acting abbot after Met. Tikhon was sent to the Pskov Metropolia in May 2018 until Abp. Ambrose was appointed abbot by the Holy Synod in August last year.

Abp. Ambrose has been appointed the new head of the Tver Metropolia, and Archpriest Maxim Kozlov, Chairman of the Church’s Educational Committee, has been appointed acting rector of the Sretensky Seminary.
