Boston, October 20, 2020
The Greek government has sent $2,363,330 (2 million euros) to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese’s Holy Cross Seminary in Boston.
The sponsorship was initially suggested by former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Responsible for Hellenes Abroad, Antonis Diamataris, and was announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a visit to Washington in February.
The official announcement of the payment will be made on Friday by the Greek Ambassador to America, Alexandra Papadopoulou, though the Ambassador already confirmed in a telephone interview with the National Herald that the money has been sent, reports Romfea.
Friday’s announcement will be made at the seminary in the presence of Archbishop Elpidophoros.
As the ambassador explained, the prime minister promised to help the school after hearing of its financial troubles from Abp. Elpidophoros, though it was not clear if she promised 2 million euros is a one-time gift, or an annual sponsorship. Prime Minister Mitsotakis is especially interested in Greek education in America and for priests to be well-prepared, Ambassador Papadopoulou explained.
Abp. Elpidophoros will decide together with the school how best to spend the money, the ambassador said.
