Monk was murdered in Republika Srpska for drug money, suspect detained

Photo: Facebook Photo: Facebook One suspect in the murder of a monk of Glogovac Monastery in Republika Srpska has been detained, and police are still looking for a second.

Fr. Stefan, 62, a monk since 2007 and member of the Glogovac brotherhood in the village of Babići since 2012, was fatally stabbed at the monastery on Monday morning, December 7. His funeral was served this morning.

During the investigation, police discovered that about $62 (100 marks) collected by the monks throughout the week were missing, reports novosti.rs.

A source in the Serbian Church informed OrthoChristian that the perpetrator was a drug addict who was a frequent visitor to the monastery. Coming down from a high, the man went to the monastery to demand money for drugs from Fr. Stefan. When the monk refused, the perpetrator stabbed him once in the chest and once below the heart.

The attack occurred in the monastery trapeza. Fr. Stefan called another monk who was out on monastery business to tell him of the attack. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he died of his injuries at 6:15 PM.

Police have detained one man from Banja Luka, whom they brought him to the monastery to help reconstruct what happened. Police are still searching for the man who helped the perpetrator get away.
