Facebook 21-year-old Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa opened fire at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, on Tuesday, leaving behind 10 innocent victims aged 20 to 65 years old.
Among the victims was 23-year-old Neven Stanišić, a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church in Lakewood, Colorado, reports The Denver Post.
His family fled the war in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, looking for a better life in America. Neven was born after the family had already moved to America. He was already in his car, leaving the King Soopers grocery store after fixing a coffee machine inside when a bullet struck him.
“His family fled the war in the former Yugoslavia and everything they had was either left behind or destroyed,” said parish rector Fr. Radovan Petrović. “They left everything to save their lives, and came here to have a new start.”
“He was an amazing child,” said Popadija Ivana. “We’ve known the family ever since we became their spiritual father and mother here. He was a very good, shy, hardworking boy and one of those kiddos who listened to his parents the best.” She would often point to him as an example for her own children to follow.
“He was a very mild-mannered but hard-working, well-regarded young man,” Fr. Radovan said. “(The family was) dedicated to life here, and to have his happen to him, that’s something neighbors and much of our community cannot comprehend.”
May Neven’s memory be eternal!
