Archimandrite Athanasios Gotsis of the Church of the Dormition and Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos in the coastal town of Kato Almiri, not far from Corinth, was on his way home to Athikia from a Baptism when, under unclear circumstances, he lost of control of his car and smashed into an olive tree.

The car then went up in flames with Fr. Athanasios trapped inside, reports Vima Orthodoxias. He was just 52 years old, having served 18 years as a priest.

“His death has plunged the area into mourning as the archimandrite was dear and knew most of the inhabitants personally,” the outlet writes.
