Alushta, Crimea, August 6, 2021
Sts. Cosmas and Damian Monastery in Crimea suffered severe damage on Wednesday evening as a result of torrential downpours.
The resulting mudslide that came down from the mountains brought with it fragments of trees, stones, and clay, and the river passing through the territory of the monastery overflowed its banks, and the road was washed away, the monastery reports.
The retaining walls and storage rooms with food and firewood and coal for the winter were severely damaged, the entire park area was destroyed, including centuries-old trees, and the refectory is ruined. The church and fraternal building and chapel, inside which is a miraculous holy spring, and a walnut tree planted by Royal Martyr Nicholas II are all under threat of being destroyed.
The monastery appealed to Republic and local officials to provide all possible assistance, and as Abbot Hilarion told rg.ru last night, emergency workers have already begun to clean up the area.
