Last month, the Holy Synod of the Russian Church established October 30 as a day of commemoration of all such innocent victims. At the same time, it proposed that the Synods of the autonomous Churches, exarchates, metropolitan districts, and dioceses outside Russia determine their own day for memorial commemorations.
Accordingly, a meeting of the clergy of the Diocese of Baku was held on Sunday under the chairmanship of His Eminence Archbishop Theophylact of Pyatigorsk, who is temporarily managing the Azerbaijani diocese, at which it was decided to establish the Sunday closest to November 2 as the day of prayerful commemoration for all victims of soviet persecution, reports the diocesan press service.
The commemoration falls on Sunday, October 31 this year.
November 2 is the feast of Hieromartyr John of Baku, the rector of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Baku, who endured terrible persecution and was shot to death on November 2, 1937. He was canonized as a New Marty in 2000.
