Vala do Carregado, November 30, 2021
A new parish of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church has opened in Portugal.
With the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine and in coordination with His Eminence Archbishop Nestor, the Moscow Patriarchate hierarch of Madrid and Lisbon, a new parish was founded in the suburbs of the capital city of Lisbon, reports the Ukrainian Church’s Information-Education Department.
The first Liturgy was celebrated on Sunday, November 28, in the town of Vala do Carregado in one of the local Catholic churches.
The Ukrainian Church previously opened two other parishes in Portugal in late 2017. In November 2019, the Romanian Orthodox Church consecrated its first monastery in the Iberian state.
A chapel of the Russian Orthodox Church was consecrated this past August for the faithful in southern Portugal. Last July, the foundation was laid for the first Russian Orthodox church to be built as such in Portugal.
In April of this year, an Orthodox prayer book in Portuguese was published for the first time.
