Mt. Athos, March 23, 2022
According to the civil governor of Mt. Athos, recent reports alleging espionage and intrigues in St. Panteleimon’s Monastery have no basis in reality.
St. Panteleimon’s is the Russian-tradition monastery on the Holy Mountain.
The governor, Thanasis Martinou, sent a clarifying statement to George Theocharis, the director of the popular Greek Orthodox outlet Vima Orthodoxias.
The letter reads:
On the occasion of various publications, I wanted to provide the following clarifications regarding the Holy Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos, the so-called Russian Monastery.
As governor I have known the Abbot, Elder Evlogy, the Deputy Abbot, Fr. Makary, and the members of the brotherhood who come from either Russia or Ukraine well.
They are very pious, dedicated to their religious duties, and constantly pray for their homeland during these difficult times.
As a political administration, our concern is to serve and support the Holy Monasteries of St. Panteleimon (Russian), Hilandar (Serbian), Zographou (Bulgarian) and the Holy Hermitage of Prodromos (Romanian) so that they would feel the affection and interest of the Greek people.
We have developed bonds of mutual sympathy and trust with the above holy monasteries.
Today, our thoughts are close to our Russian and Ukrainian peers of the Holy Monastery of St. Panteleimon and we wholeheartedly wish and pray that peace will soon come to the peoples who are being tested.
