After more than a decade of work, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero was consecrated yesterday.

The previous St. Nicholas Church was destroyed by falling rubble on 9/11, and in 2010, Church leaders reached an agreement to build a new church at the site. Patriarch Bartholomew officially opened the church during a visit to the U.S. in November.

The new church is envisioned as “a place for everyone who comes to the Sacred Ground at the World Trade Center to imagine and envision a world where mercy is inevitable, reconciliation is desirable and forgiveness is possible,” according to Archbishop Elpidophoros, the head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

The consecration was celebrated by Abp. Elpidophoros, Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, and Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh. The consecrated altar was also signed by all the GOARCH hierarchs who were present, the two living former Archbishops of America Spyridon and Demetrios, Protopresbyter Alexander Karloutsos, and Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon and Metropolitan Prodromos of Rethymnon (Crete), who were representing the Patriarchate of Constantinople, reports the site of GOARCH’s 46th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress.

Relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were sealed in the altar during the Liturgy and consecration service. Abp. Elpidophoros spoke about how the relics are now connected with the “modern martyrs” who perished on 9/11:

Today, these holy and precious remains of a saint—whose own history stretches back across the millennia and across the ocean, to Asia Minor and the glory of Byzantium that lives on in our Ecumenical Patriarchate—are joined to the history of those for whom the World Trade Center was their tomb. These modern martyrs—slain by unjust hatred—were denied even the chance of burial. And so, with today’s Consecration, Ground Zero remains forever sacred ground—a place of remembrance, a place of reconciliation, a place of forgiveness and a place of love.

The Archbishop continued to explain the purpose of the new church:

It is my solemn pledge that we will offer the very best of our Orthodox faith—a faith that encompasses the world and is led by the greatest leader we have known in centuries:

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the longest serving Patriarch in history, upon the See of the First-Called Apostle Andrew.

He also explains that the church was consecrated precisely on the Fourth of July to emphasize the freedom to choose one’s own religion:

We chose the Fourth of July for this Consecration for a very special reason. We chose it precisely because this quintessential American Holiday represents what is best in our liberty—that is, freedom of conscience and the freedom to worship as we best determine for ourselves and for our families.

Indeed, this is the beauty of America, and it will be the beauty of the St. Nicholas National Shrine, too. For, although it is a Greek Orthodox house of worship, we welcome all. We invite all. We accept all. And we practice love of others; not prejudice; not rejection; and certainly not hatred.

This shrine will be a place for everyone who comes to the Sacred Ground at the World Trade Center to imagine and envision a world where mercy is inevitable, reconciliation is desirable, and forgiveness is possible.

I must say this is not an event to celebrate. This is alleged Orthodox church is not an Orthodox church but is a temple of falsehood, which contains a “non-denominational ecumenical bereavement centre” where all religions can “say a prayer, light a candle, or pay their respects however their religion feels appropriate”. How can we call this an Orthodox Church where such things exist when the apostle himself says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with the unbeliever? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?” This is building is a symbol of apostasy from the Faith once handed down to all the saints to the demonic heresy of pan-religious ecumenicism. “These modern martyrs—slain by unjust hatred—were denied even the chance of burial.” Those who died in the twin towers are victims of an evil act committed by the terrorists, but they are my no means martyrs. They did not die as witnesses (μᾰ́ρτῠρες) for Christ. To equate them to the holy martyrs who wiling lay down their lives in true love of God and their fellow men is blasphemy. One must be very careful attributing martyrdom to any due to ‘unjust hatred’. “It is my solemn pledge that we will offer the very best of our Orthodox faith—a faith that encompasses the world and is led by the greatest leader we have known in centuries: His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew” By what standards the Heresiarch Bartholomew a great leader? For entering into communion with schematics, for justifying an anathematised former bishop he himself condemned? For causing a schism by invading the territory of another bishop, metropolitan and patriarch? For con-celebrating with laymen? For claiming to be the first without eqauls or for his deeply heretical beliefs which he and the members of his synod use to justify such a claim? ‘We chose the Fourth of July for this Consecration for a very special reason. We chose it precisely because this quintessential American Holiday represents what is best in our liberty—that is, freedom of conscience and the freedom to worship as we best determine for ourselves and for our families. ‘ Whist freedom of worship is to be appreciated, it is not what is ‘best in our liberty’, what is best is not ‘freedom to worship as we best determine’ rather freedom to worship as we ought. To render rightly to God our lives, our worship and our belief, this is right glorification or Orthodoxy. “[A]lthough it is a Greek Orthodox house of worship, we welcome all. We invite all. We accept all. And we practice love of others; not prejudice; not rejection; and certainly not hatred.” Well actually no as Greek Orthodox we do not welcome, invite and accept all without discrimination; rather we accept that all are made in the image of God, thus we invite all to repentance, that they may be welcomed into the household of God. This is practicing love for others which comes only with prejudice, a holy prejudice which rejects falsehood for it has already judged in favour of truth. It may be permitted for the non-Orthodox Christians to enter our churches and in economia to themselves pray to the one true God therein but this cannot be the purpose of the place or undertaken without discernment.

Modern martyrs? 9/11 was horrible but to call them martyrs is a bit of a reach

"and is led by the greatest leader we have known in centuries" Okay let's just forget all the past Ecumenical Patriarchs like the Hieromartyr Gregory V xD

Troubling that once again, Elpidophoros gives more praise to his heirarch than to Christ Himself, all while crafting his words to garner wordly acceptance and avoid church theology. We do not go to church to "imagine and envision" a world of peace, but to glorify God, repent and pray for the world. His Eminence's words reveal much.

Yes, Steve...God bless America! Though, are you going to come up with the ADDITIONAL 40 Million Dollars to 'complete' this church? Because, that's what the GOA is asking from their membership. In the financial world, we call this a big boondoggle.

God bless America! What a beautiful church and testimony of the Orthodox faith.

Did he say that EP Bartholomew is the greatest Church leader in centuries?!? Did he also say that it is not particularly important to be an Orthodox Christian?!? Was the Marxist abortion-lover Mayor of New York in attendance? Lord have mercy! He needs to be deposed very quickly.
