Thessaloniki, November 3, 2022
The Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki is expected to send a circular to its clergy and parishes soon with instructions on how to reduce energy costs.
Unfortunately, that includes an end to nighttime vigils.
“We’ll stop the vigils in our parishes because more energy is used in the evening hours and it costs too much,” Fr. Iakovos, the Protosyngellos of the Metropolis, told makthes.gr.
Lights and heaters will also be limited in the coming period.
“So you understand, in just my parish of St. Therapont, we need 12,000 euros a month for operating expenses,” Fr. Iakovos said.
The Greek Parliament began turning off the exterior lights on the building as an example for energy consumption in September.
And in Estonia, the School of St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco in Tallinn, which opened last school year, is in special need of prayer and material support.
“The heating season has begun, and utility bills will markedly increase in November,” the Estonian Orthodox Church reports.
