His Eminence Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, Pharan, and Raitho, and Abbot of St. Catherine’s Monastery (Jerusalem Patriarchate) was hospitalized on Friday after celebrating the Divine Liturgy.

The 87-year-old hierarch was visiting his hometown of Atalanti, Phthiotis, Greece, where he celebrated with the local hierarch, Metropolitan Simeon, on the feast of St. Catherine. In his words after the Liturgy, he mentioned that he wasn’t feeling well, reports the lampiareport.gr.

At Met. Simeon’s urging, he went to see a cardiologist and was then taken to the Lamia General Hospital for further examinations, and later he was again transferred to a hospital in Athens.

In early 2018, the Archbishop spent nearly two months in the hospital after suffering a serious fall in the monastery.

Meanwhile, His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol of the Church of Cyprus has tested positive for COVID for the second time. He was briefly hospitalized with COVID in March 2021.

Met. Athanasios is the most popular candidate among the Cypriot laity to take up the Archepiscopal throne. A vote will be held in parishes on December 18, after which the three most popular names will be sent to the Holy Synod for a vote. The previous primate, Archbishop Chrysostomos, reposed in the Lord on November 7.
