Syria, February 10, 2023
Given the tragic situation in the wake of the two earthquakes that struck on Monday, the U.S. Department of Treasury decided to lift sanctions against Syria for the next six months.
Thus, all transactions related to earthquake relief that would be otherwise be prohibited will be allowed. The measure expires on August 8, but could be extended after that, reports the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.
His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and the heads of other Syrian churches made a fervent appeal on Tuesday for sanctions to be lifted.
The move from the U.S. will make it much easier for the Antiochian Archdiocese and other organizations to send urgent relief funds.
As OrthoChristian reported on Wednesday, in addition to taking up donations in parishes throughout February, the Archdiocese of North America has also launched an earthquake relief fund to receive donations online to help those suffering in Turkey and Syria.
The Archdiocese has already sent an initial $250,000, and yesterday it announced a $150,000 matching fund for online donations.

The Greek Orthodox ARchdioces of America has also launched an earthquake relief fund, with an initial fundraising goal of $500,000.
Donations can be made online at goarch.org/earthquake. Checks may also be sent to the Archdiocese at 8 E. 79th St., New York, NY 10075, and made payable to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese with a memo notation of “Earthquake Relief Fund.”
Relief is also being raised by the International Orthodox Christian Charities.
