A day of prayer for sports and all participating athletes and coaches was established by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece at its session last month.

The decision was made in response to the proposal by Metropolitan Markos of Chios, Chairman of Synodal Committee for Sports, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.

In particular, the Synod decided to hold a solemn Divine Liturgy just before Christmas every year at the Church of St. Spyridon near the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. Prayers will be offered for the spiritual strengthening of athletes, coaches, and sports agents.

Every diocese is encouraged to establish its own analogous event.

According to the Orthodoxia News Agency, the Church emphasizes sports to encourage socialization and teach children discipline.
