Archbishop of Crete hospitalized

The Archbishop of Crete has been hospitalized.

Archbishop Eugenios, 55, was hospitalized with a respiratory infection and will be resting from official duties for a few days, until his health is restored, Romfea reported yesterday.

May God grant Abp. Eugenios a full and speedy recovery!

Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is also currently hospitalized, having broken his hip on July 23.

Abp. Eugenios was born in Heraklion on February 14, 1968. After high school he graduated from the Theological School of the University of Athens in May 1990. He completed postgraduate studies at the Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1992.

He was tonsured a monastic the Holy Monastery of St. George Selinari on the island of Crete on February 23, 1991. He was ordained a hierodeacon the next day, and a hieromonk a week later. He was appointed a preacher of the Metropolis of Petra and elevated to the rank of archimandrite on December 24, 1991.

Beginning in 1994, he served as a parish priest at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panagia Neapolis, and in 1997, he took over the administration of the Ecclesiastical Spiritual Center of the city of Agios Nikolaos. He has served in the management of a number of organizations, including as Vice President of the Association of Cretan Theologians (1995-1997). He has also served as secretary of the Synod of Crete and as chief editor of the official Church of Crete bulletin.

He was consecrated as Bishop of Knossos on May 28, 2005. He was later enthroned as Metropolitan of Rethymno on October 16, 2010, then elected as Archbishop of Crete by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople on January 11, 2022.
