A group of Greek Orthodox nuns and their wonderworking icon of the Most Holy Theotokos have been evacuated to safety as fires approach dangerously close to their monastery in Fyli, just north of Athens.

According to the fire department, a fire broke out in the wooded area near the Kleiston Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos this morning. More than two dozen firetrucks and five helicopters were on the scene to fight the blaze, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.

Although the 50 nuns didn’t want to leave their monastery, saying they didn’t care about the physical bodies, the police and firefighters were eventually able to persuade them to be evacuated out.

The nuns made sure to take their Panagia Eleousa (Virgin of Tenderness) Icon with them.

Last month, OrthoChristian reported on another group of nuns who didn’t want to leave their place of repentance, despite the fires raging around them. Greece has been plagued by wildfires this summer. A monastery on Rhodes was severely damaged, and an historic church, and most recently, an historic church in Alexandroupoli was completely destroyed.
