The ancient Church of the Resurrection of the Word in the village of Yurlovo, Mozhaysk Deanery, was built almost 300 years ago, in 1727. Constructed in the classical style with elements of Naryshkin Baroque, it endured many hardships until it was closed by Soviet authorities in 1941 and repurposed as a community club. In the 1950s and 1960s, to make way for road construction, the altar section was blown up, and the refectory and upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled for bricks.
In 2011, Father Yaroslav Yerofeyev conducted the first Divine Liturgy in the church in seventy-five years. That same year, parishioners began conservation and restoration efforts to preserve the surviving parts of the church. In 2024, an initiative group consisting of church parishioners, residents of Yurlovo, and individuals passionate about their history decided to begin full-scale restoration and renovation of the Church of the Resurrection of the Word.
On January 23, 2025, Archbishop Thomas of Odintsovo and Krasnogorsk celebrated the first hierarchical Divine Liturgy in many decades. The archbishop was assisted by the church’s rector, Father Yaroslav Yerofeyev, and Father Sergey Latyshev. After the service, Archbishop Thomas was presented with a model of the future restored church.
