“People with severe disabilities and multiple dependency needs should have the same opportunities to exercise their rights and participate according to their potential in the society in which they live. The level of a country’s civility is judged by the possibilities it gives to people with disabilities to demonstrate their virtues, their strengths, their tenacity for life and action, and to attain their dreams,” Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece said during a recent visit to the Pan-Hellenic Paraplegics Association.

Ortodoxia.info reports that the Greek primate recalled his first visit to the association, which impressed upon him how insignificant people’s problems often are, especially compared to people who do not have the use of their limbs and require continual assistance. “You give us an example of strength for all our people to fight and overcome our difficulties,” the archbishop said, offering a message of courage and hope.

“People with severe motor disabilities, and particularly children and young people, are an integral part of our society and have the same rights and obligations in accordance with their abilities,” he added.

Members of the association also expressed their gratitude to the Church which has stood by them in the current economic crisis in Greece. Association president Athanasios Viglas described the Church’s charitable activities as a “balm” for the “doleful Greek society” at the present time. “The enduring solidarity of the Church and your personality create a perfect blend of people, altruism and generosity. May the Resurrection of the Lord enlighten your work,” Viglas said to Archbishop Ieronymos.

The Greek hierarch pledged to continue to stand by the charitable organization “Mission,” which has been helping disabled people since 2011. Over 26,000 pounds of food have been provided by the program for the relief of hundreds of Greek citizens who are fighting for their right to human dignity.
