The Russian Orthodox Church’s mission to the people of Thailand continues with the publication of a new liturgical music collection in the Thai language.
orthodox.or.th With the blessing of the Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia, His Eminence Metropolitan Sergei of Singapore and Southeast Asia, the Thailand Diocesan administration has issued the new collection including the most frequently used liturgical services, including Great Vespers, the Divine Liturgy, and selected hymns from Lent and the Paschal period, reports orthodox.or.th.
The Vespers service is supplemented with translations of the Sunday stichera and troparia, with one-voice and two-voice compositions provided for each voice. Some translation errors in earlier editions have also been fixed.
The new collection allows for services to be celebrated entirely in Thai, which is becoming more relevant in recent years, with the increasing number of Orthodox congregations from the local population.
Due to the growth of Orthodoxy in Southeast Asia, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church resolved to create four dioceses in the region at its sessions in February 2019, including the Diocese of Thailand.
The text of the Presanctified Liturgy in the Thai language was published in March of last year. In April 2018, a collection with the text of the Paschal services in the Thai language was published. A few months earlier, a collection with the text of Great Vespers, Festal Matins, the Hours, and the Divine Liturgy in the Thai language was also published. The Orthodox Church: History and Teachings by Bishop Alexander (Mileant) was also published at that time.
The catechetical book The Law of God by Archpriest Seraphim Slobodskoy was printed in Thai in 2012, and a book on the history of Christianity in 2013.
