Former bishop of Russian Church dies in car accident

Leningrad Province, November 25, 2021

Former Bishop Diomid of Anadyr and Chukotka of the Russian Orthodox Church died in a car accident in the Leningrad Province over the weekend.

Diomid, who served as a hierarch until he was defrocked in 2008 for schismatic activities, was in a passenger car that collided with a truck on the Vologda-New Ladoga Highway on Saturday, reports RIA-Novosti.

He was 61 years old.

Diomid (Dzyuban) was born in 1961. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1987 and the priesthood in 1991, and was consecrated to the episcopacy in 2000.

In 2007, he began to issue public condemnations of the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church, including His Holiness Patriarch Alexei. On the eve of the reunion with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, he called for the isolation of the Russian Church.

He was removed from the administration of his diocese in June 2008, after which he declared an anathema against Pat. Alexei. In October, he was defrocked.

He then founded the so-called “Most Holy Governing Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church” with a small group of supporters, though he soon became largely inactive.
