The Bulgarian state has decided to allocate significant financial assistance to Zographou, the Bulgarian Monastery on Mt. Athos.

The government will provide $1.79 million (3.5 million leva) towards the restoration of the eastern wing of the holy habitation, Acting Minister of Culture Velislav Minekov announced during a briefing to the Cabinet on August 26, reports World Stock Market.

The eastern wing, built 200 years ago, is currently uninhabited and in serious condition. It is where St. Paisius of Hilandar wrote his famous Slavonic-Bulgarian History, the first work of Bulgarian historiography from the National Revival period.

OrthoChristian reported on government allocations to Zographou in 2014 and 2019, though according to the statement from Minekov, they seem not to have materialized. The funding is long overdue, he said.

The Acting Minister also intends to meet with the abbot of the monastery to discuss other ways of providing support, including helping to modernize the heating system and repairing the road leading to Zographou.

Zographou also received funds for restoration from Greece’s Transport Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainable Development project earlier this year.
