An LGBT program was launched in schools throughout Moldova this week, causing a great scandal in the country where 98% of the population identifies as Orthodox.
The campaign, “LGBT Children in Your School,” is presented as a program of awareness regarding the rights of LGBT+ children in Moldova. The author of the campaign, Tatiana Corcebaş-Onica, says that it “gives courage to teachers and other adults in the school community to be aware that stereotypes and prejudices against LGBT children affect all children,” reports G4Media.ro.
Conversely, “Maia Sandu's government is destroying faith, the family, the economy step by step. This leadership is destroying the country!” says former President Igor Dodon. Former Prime Minister Ion Chicu is also distressed: “People can’t handle their bills and daily needs, but the government has other urgent concerns—to promote LGBT in schools.”
The government of Gagauzia, an autonomous region within Moldova, has banned the campaign in its schools. LGBT marches and all propaganda in favor of non-traditional families was banned there in May.
Likewise, the Moldovan Orthodox Church under His Eminence Metropolitan Vladimir of Chișinău (Moscow Patriarchate) condemned the program in a statement published on Wednesday:
The Metropolis of Chișinău and All Moldova condemns the launch of the “LGBT Children in Your School” campaign, developed by the GENDERDOC-M Information Center.
In recent years, the Orthodox Church of Moldova has repeatedly warned society about the negative development and increased danger following the implementation of the LGBT agenda in society.
Propaganda of the LGBT agenda and its development is absolutely unacceptable, both socially and from a Christian point of view.
This campaign is inadmissible under any circumstances. This is despite the fact that Christianity is tolerant of homosexuals and intolerant of homosexuality.
Through this campaign there was a dangerous tendency to elevate homosexuality to the rank of “normality.” However, the Holy Scriptures state unequivocally: homosexuality is a sin.
LGBT propaganda in schools is a harsh attack on the family institution, moral values, and ethical norms. The globalizing encouragement of libertinism among teenagers will eventually lead to the spiritual self-destruction of humanity.
We would like to emphasize the fact that we are not trying to incite hatred against certain categories of citizens of our country, but only to defend our values and traditions, in order to offer the young generation a healthy and dignified education, in the spirit of Orthodox Christian teaching, which was at the basis of the genesis of our people and through which we have survived over time despite the countless historical weathers that we have been given to pass through.
We urge believers to sign the online petition calling for a ban on the "LGBT Children in Your School" campaign.
Met. Vladimir also condemned LGBT marches as an abuse of societal and religious values in a statement in May.
