Among the passengers of the hijacked Egyptian airplane were bishops of the Church of Alexandria

Larnaca, March 29, 2016

On Tuesday, March 29, an Airbus A320 of the EgyptAir airline with 88 passengers on board was hijacked in Egypt. The plane was flying from Alexandria to Cairo, but the hijacker forced the pilots to land in Larnaca on Cyprus. After the landing the hijacker freed nearly all the kidnapped passengers from the aircraft.

According to the Romfea news agency, among the hostages were hierarchs of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria: Archbishop Damaskinos of Johannesburg and Pretoria along with Bishop Nicodemos, consecrated on March 27 by Pope and Patriarch Theodore (Theodoros) II of Alexandria and All Africa.

Both hierarchs are safe and in good health reports Romfea.
