On Friday, August 18, 2017, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America issued a response to the recent racist violence in Charlottesville, VA.

The members of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America, who fully participate in the work of the Assembly, issued a similar statement, the complete text of which was made available on-line on Wednesday, August 16.

The text of the Assembly of Bishops’ response appears below.

The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America
Response to Racist Violence in Charlottesville, VA

The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America stands with all people of good will in condemning the hateful violence and lamenting the loss of life that resulted from the shameful efforts to promote racial bigotry and white supremacist ideology in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Orthodox Church emphatically declares that it does not promote, protect or sanction participation in such reprehensible acts of hatred, racism, and discrimination, and proclaims that such beliefs and behaviors have no place in any community based in respect for the law and faith in a loving God.

The essence of the Christian Gospel and the spirit of the Orthodox Tradition are entirely and self-evidently incompatible with ideologies that declare the superiority of any race over another. Our God shows no partiality or favoritism (Deuteronomy 10:17, Romans 2:11). Our Lord Jesus Christ broke down the dividing wall of hostility that had separated God from humans and humans from each other (Ephesians 2:14). In Christ Jesus, the Church proclaims, there can be neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, but all are one (Galatians 3:28). Furthermore, we call on one another to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather to expose them (Ephesians 5:11). And what is darkness if not hatred? The one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness (1 John 2:11)!

Furthermore, in 1872, Hierarchs from around the world assembled in Constantinople and denounced all forms of xenophobia and chauvinism (phyletism). They agreed that the promotion of racial or national supremacy and ethnic bias or dissension in the Church of Christ is to be censured as contrary to the sacred teachings of the Christian Gospel and the holy canons of the Church. It is formally condemned as heresy, the strongest category of false teaching.

Finally, such actions as we have witnessed in recent days, by self-proclaimed white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and various racists and fascists, betray the core human values of love and solidarity. In this, we pray wholeheartedly for the families of those who lost their lives or suffered in these tragic events. In like manner, we cannot condone any form of revenge or retaliation by any group or individual. Therefore, we fervently appeal to every person of good will, and especially the leaders of our great nation, to consider and adopt ways of reconciling differences in order to rise above any and all discrimination in our history, our present, and our future.

Could pravoslavie komrade publishers inform their readership as to why we are now on the third article about what is essentially a non issue for Orthodox.

And have we had any statements of condemnation by these oca heads in respect of the neo nazi violence being committed against the Church and ethnic Russians in occupied Ukraine. If not. Why not. If so. Maybe the komrades should be so good as to publish what these church heads on their moral high horse have written or spoken out in defence of suffering Orthodox.

The Orthodox Church in America are not a true Church but a creation of the (((Soviets))).

That Pravoslavie even give these fakers the time of day is disgusting and borders of collusion with schismatics.

To advance the 'racist'narrative is to advance Trotskyism; 'racism' is a 100% bogus term......it means NOTHING.

I too am wondering why the atheist leftists were not condemned in the same breath, since they too, in hating their brother, walk in utter darkness. This statement seems so milquetoast/slam-dunk/unnuanced, and is like so much put out by bureaucracies concerned about insurance premiums and corporate policy statememts, not genuine pastors of Christ's rational sheep. This really must be the end of the world.

Yes, while racism is detestable the destruction of statue of the great general Robert E. Lee is also awful. The promoters of the violence here were the communists, who the "white supremacists" are a (extreme) reaction to, these people who have taken over our media and education system and would be only too happy to massacre all those who declare they are Christians primarily among those the traditional Orthodox and catholic adherents in America. Just as the communists did wherever the satanic ideology landed.

This statement addressed to "every person of good will" ...which to each person can mean a subjectively different point of view seems to be much of a "blanket" statement and also seems pander to the "popular" mindset that what happened in Charlottesville falls squarely and solely upon those who called to rally for freedom of speech and preservation of an historical monument of our national history. If racism and white supremacy were "cloaked" in these themes ...which may be true to some extent, I see no additional statements by the Synod opposing those who brought violence down upon the lawfully permitted rally attendees and the local law enforcement officers. Further, I would hope the Synod would also condemn the negligence and willful failure of the Governor and mayor to allow law enforcement to protect and to separate those who were looking to cause trouble. As an Orthodox Christian and retired law enforcement officer myself I remember Christ's commandment to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves." Let us please not be drawn in to cultural iconoclasm and thought policing of society at large. Let us also remember that there are those who see the teaching of the Church on heterosexual monogamy (within marriage) and condemnation of homosexual practices as "hate speech" "hate thinking" and "anti-gay" and being of "good will" those persons will think themselves doing a good service (even to God) by violently opposing His Church.

That's odd......I did not see a condemnation of the extremist group who burns and loots cities, and bludgeons people with clubs, and supports the murder of police officers, and hurls urine bombs, and spits on people, and shuts down the speech of anyone who opposes their narrow ideological anarchy, and covers their faces like the terrorists whom they imitate.

Hey OCA bishops.....the group is named "Antifa!"
