Thanks to a team of iconographers from throughout Romania, images of the great Elder Cleopa and other 20th-century elders now adorn the famous Sihăstria Monastery in Neamț County in northeastern Romania.
Led by iconographer Daniel Codrescu, a team of six frescoed the monastery’s recently remodeled entrance tower, painting, among others, images of four great clergymen of the monastery: Elder Cleopa (Ilie), Elder Paisie (Olaru), Fr. Ioanichie (Bălan), and Fr. Ioanichie (Moroi), reports the Basilica News Agency.
They are among the most beloved 20th-century Romanian spiritual fathers, who helped lead the faithful through the long years of communist persecution.
Elders Cleopa and Paisie are among those whom the Romanian Church intends to canonize in 2025 to mark the 140th anniversary of autocephaly and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Patriarchate.
The middle of the entryway arch is also adorned with a beautiful fresco of the Theotokos, “showing that Sihăstria Monastery is under the direct care of the Mother of God,” Codrescu said.
There are also icons of the angel appearing to Sts. Joachim and Anna, and local saints of Romania and Neamț, including St. John Jacob the Chozebite, St. Paisus (Velichkovsky), and St. Theodore of Sihla.
