The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church festively celebrated the feast of St. Vladimir the Great and the Baptism of Rus’ over the weekend.

The feast began with the All-Night Vigil in the Church of St. Agapit in the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra on Saturday night, led by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine. The Ukrainian primate was joined by several other hierarchs and clerics, reports the Information-Education Department of the UOC.

The Divine Liturgy for the feast was also celebrated in the Church of St. Agapit, one of the only Lavra churches still open to the canonical UOC amidst the state’s ongoing campaign of Church persecution.

Met. Onuphry was again joined by a number of hierarchs and clerics. Following the Gospel reading, His Beatitude addressed the faithful with a homily on the core of the Christian faith, which St. Vladimir accepted.

“May the Lord help us to preserve the holy faith that Prince St. Vladimir passed on to us. Those who preserve the faith of Prince Vladimir are his spiritual children. Only those who live as the prince did after his Baptism can be his children,” noted the Metropolitan.

He recalled that St. Vladimir was once cruel, but when he accepted Baptism, he became merciful, forgave and helped orphans, widows, the elderly, the sick, and all people in need.

“Such changes occurred in Prince Vladimir thanks to the holy Orthodox faith. And through his prayers, may the Lord help us to lead our lives on earth worthily, so that we may be worthy to become heirs of eternal life in Heaven in Christ Jesus our Lord!” Met. Onuphry wished.

Following the Liturgy, prayers were offered for peace in Ukraine and mercy for the poor.

Congratulating everyone with the feast, Met. Onuphry encouraged them to walk to narrow and thorny path that leads to eternal life.

There is an attempt to “Catholicize” Ukrainians. Banning the UOC would allow the transfer of believers first to the schismatic OCU, and then to the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine.

Tithes Monastery abbot Bishop Clement assured the faithful that the prayer life in the monastery will not stop. He also emphasized that they managed to save the monastery’s wonderworking icon of the Theotokos before the church was destroyed.

1988 was a turning point in the societal perception of the Russian Orthodox Church and its role in the history of Russia. The celebrations dedicated to the 1,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’ became a real triumph for the Russian Orthodox Church, which the faithful themselves could not have imagined.

Why is Prince Vladimir called holy and given the title Equal-to-the-Apostles? He converted from the darkness of paganism to the light of Christ, receiving baptism, baptizing the Kievans and sending emissaries to baptize the people of the other cities and regions of his duchy. He was among the first of the All-Russian rulers to become a Christian, and originated the Christian form of government for Russia. From his time, the Russian sovereignty becomes Orthodox, and Christianity makes its way into all the spheres of social and civil life.

The warlike prince, though he decided to convert to Christianity, could not without Divine intervention, humble his soul to the degree sufficient to appeal to the Greeks with the meek request to be baptized and to be taught, together with his people, about the new faith. At the same time, his innate wisdom and refined political instinct told him asking this of the Greeks would not be without danger.
